While You Were Sleeping

Pickpocket while Flying

First it was terrorists, then it was snakes and this month we have yet another potential adversary on our planes. Thieves!

As passengers slept on an Air France flight from Tokyo to Paris, thieves stole around $4,000 Euros from five business class passengers who slept on the overnight flight.  The airline is denying any responsibility for items held with passengers in their cabins.

This article has sparked discussion amongst our members regarding the safety of their personal items whilst sleeping on a plane.  Some argue it is the flight attendants responsibility to monitor the area to ensure that no one is taken advantage of whilst they are sleeping.  Other members jump to the defence of the busy flight attendants claiming that in a dark cabin it would be impossible to monitor all activity, and in any event the individual needs to be aware of their own personal security.

Our members provide the following handy hints and tips regarding sleeping on overnight or international flights:

  • Be vigilant with your carry-on bags, know where it is and ensure that it is not tampered with mid-flight
  • Lock your carry-on luggage
  • Only carry minimal amounts of cash on your person
  • Use credit or debit cards as an alternative to cash
  • Ensure all valuables are on your person whilst sleeping, in particular passports, credit cards and cash.
