The Infamous Bangkok Airport Scam

Bangkok Airport Scam
For many years sceptics have dismissed the infamous Bangkok airport scams as simply another frequent flyer urban legend.

However, this week one member reveals the unfortunate situation of his two friends who have fallen victim to the duty-free scam.  His two friends purchase packets of cigarettes at the airport duty free store.  They do not get a receipt nor do they ask for one.  They are subsequently detained by airport security and accused of shoplifting.  They are only released upon the production of exorbitant amounts of money.

This scam goes to the heart of every traveller’s worst fear.  The threat of a Bangkok prison is enough for many travellers to produce the money despite their apparent innocence.

Our members provide some hints, tips and tricks to avoid would-be scammers:

  • Always request a receipt with purchases from Bangkok airport
  • As an added precaution pay with your goods by credit card and request a copy of the credit card voucher.
  • Request consular assistance at the airport.
  • Request to see footage of the alleged shoplifting.
  • If you are shopping in the Bangkok duty free stores take care not to move items around in the duty free shopping area before paying for them as this could be mistaken for shoplifting.
